5 Habits to Build While On a GLP-1 Medication

5 Habits to Build on Semaglutides
It’s Not Just About the Shot
Taking a GLP-1 medication like Ozempic, Wegovy, or Mounjaro can feel like flipping a switch. Suddenly, your appetite drops, the number on the scale starts to fall, and it feels like things are finally working. But the real transformation doesn’t come from the injection alone. It comes from the habits you build while your biology is giving you a helping hand.
GLP-1 receptor agonists suppress appetite and stabilize blood sugar, but they don’t teach you how to eat, move, or live in a sustainable way. If you don’t build those foundations now, you risk losing muscle, slowing your metabolism, and regaining the weight once you stop the medication.

Here are the top 5 habits you should build during your time on a GLP-1, so you can keep your progress, feel amazing, and create a healthier future.

1. Prioritize Protein at Every Meal
When you’re not hungry, it’s easy to skip meals or just “grab something light.” But that’s exactly how people end up losing muscle instead of just fat. Protein is essential for muscle retention, recovery, hormone health, and long-term metabolism. And because GLP-1 medications naturally reduce your appetite, you need to intentionally eat protein, not just wait to feel hungry for it.

Target:
Aim for 0.7–1.0g of protein per pound of goal lean body mass per day. This means prioritizing lean, easy-to-digest protein sources like eggs, egg whites, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, protein shakes, lean poultry, or white fish.

If you skip this habit, you may lose weight, but a large portion could be muscle, which slows your metabolism and increases the chance of regaining the weight later.

2. Lift Weights (Even Just a Little)
GLP-1 medications cause weight loss through appetite suppression, not fat targeting. That means if you’re not strength training, your body will lose muscle along with fat.
Resistance training sends your body a signal: keep this tissue, it’s useful. Even two or three strength sessions per week can significantly reduce muscle loss and protect your metabolic health.

Don’t overthink it. You don’t need to be a gym rat. Bodyweight movements, dumbbells at home, or machines at your local gym can do the trick, as long as you're consistent.
Why it matters: Muscle is your insurance policy for long-term health. It improves insulin sensitivity, protects your bones, and helps you stay independent as you age.

3. Eat Mostly Whole Foods
When your appetite is low, highly processed foods can sneak back in because they’re convenient, tasty, and easy to eat in small amounts. But they’re also low in nutrients and can worsen symptoms like nausea, fatigue, or constipation.
Focus on whole foods:
  • Lean proteins
  • Vegetables (especially cooked)
  • Fruits
  • Whole grains
  • Healthy fats like olive oil, avocado, or nuts

Bonus: Whole foods are easier on your digestive system, especially when cooked. This reduces GI symptoms, one of the biggest reasons people stop taking GLP-1s.

4. Stay Consistent with Hydration and Fiber
Constipation is one of the most common and uncomfortable side effects of GLP-1 medications. The fix? Water + fiber, but it has to be the right kind.Start with soluble fiber from foods like oats, chia seeds, berries, or cooked vegetables. Insoluble fiber like raw greens can make symptoms worse for some people early on.
Tip: Pair fiber with water to keep things moving. Aim for 2.5–3.5 liters of water a day, adjusting based on body size and physical activity. Failing to do this can lead to GI issues, fatigue, and nutrient malabsorption, making the medication harder to tolerate and easier to quit.

5. Create a Daily Routine (Even a Simple One)
Habits don’t build themselves. Now that you’re eating less and possibly experiencing new symptoms, having structure in your day will help you stay consistent even when motivation dips.

Your routine doesn’t need to be complex:

  • Wake up and drink water
  • Eat protein-based meals at consistent times
  • Walk or stretch daily
  • Journal how you’re feeling
  • Sleep 7–9 hours each night

GLP-1s give you a window of opportunity. Use this period to build identity-shaping habits, ones you can take with you long after you’re off the meds.

Use the Drug, Don’t Let It Use You
